The Decorated

What Was the Decorated?

The Decorated radiator was the only ornate design ever produced by the Beeston Boiler Company. Created to compete with the American Radiator Company’s popular Rococo model, it shared many similarities with its American counterpart.

First appearing in Beeston catalogues from 1914,  production continued into the early 1920s before ceasing by 1925. By this period, ornate radiators had become increasingly rare as Edwardian column designs dominated the market.

Beeston’s focus was always on providing affordable, heating solutions, emphasising efficiency over ornamentation. Their motto, “Beeston Radiators have proved beyond all doubt to be the most economical low-pressure hot water apparatus on the market,” reflects this. Unlike the American Radiator Company, which had a strong market for highly decorative designs in the US, the demand for such radiators in the UK was comparatively limited.

The Decorated: Key Features

The Decorated radiator closely resembled the American Radiator Company’s Rococo, with both featuring the distinctive ‘ears’ at the top of each section. However, the Decorated’s ears were more pronounced, giving it a slightly bolder appearance.

A key difference between the two designs was the absence of cross-braces between columns in the Decorated, whereas the Rococo included them. Despite this, the ornate patterns on the Decorated’s surface were strikingly similar to those of its American counterpart.

Beeston also produced a low, curved version of the Decorated, which was ideal for fitting beneath bay windows. The three-column version was notable for its decorative legs and the presence of curved chaffles above the legs, features not found on the one- and two-column version.
